A VR Application that Teleports You to Places
Welcome to Light Fields is a VR app that lets you experience unprecedented real-world depth, reflections, and translucence in VR. The app comprises navigable stills that puts on display future technology Google is working for powering next-gen VR.
Quite Realistic
VR video is certainly a great technology to explore the world. However, the work on video is currently in progress and the end product could take some time to see the light of the day. In the interim, Light Fields app presents a completely different level of imagery that exhibits how convincing VR experiences could be. The application gives you a guided seven-minute tour to understand the technology better and also lets you take a look at the locations such as the Space Shuttle Discovery and Mosaic Tile House. The app is not its complete self yet and only showcases what the potential is like.
The Images
The images, though being just stills, feel like small worlds ready to be explored. The app that incorporates these Google images would work with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and quite a few other VR headsets. For several headset users, this app would probably be their first encounter with live-action VR, which they could traverse moving their head. The images used in the application are the result of light field recording and recreation. Light fields is a term that refers to light moving in multiple directions within a specific volume of space. Google has used many small, interlinked cameras for capturing the images.
