Monitor your favorite websites for updates and changes

The best way to keep track of websites and web feeds is via RSS, whether directly in your browser or via an dedicated reader.

However, what do you do when there is no RSS feed to follow? Well, one solution is to install something like Website Widget. Website Widget does a simple job of tracking websites for changes, and glows red once it’s detected something.

Using it is simple. Just click the ‘Info’ symbol in the bottom right-hand corner to enter a URL and site name. Website Widget will glow red once it has detected a change in the page. The concept is very simple and I can see how it could be useful for the odd website that you really like but have no way of following any other way.

However, one problem is that Website Widget only monitors one website at a time – it’s no good if you want to follow more than one. The only workaround for this is to click the ‘+’ symbol on your Dashboard and install multiple instances of Website Widget, although this soon clutters-up your dashboard.

Another problem is that it gives no indication of where the changes have taken place on the page. The developer does warn that it’s not really suitable for websites with a high volume of changes per day where it can be difficult to see where the changes are.

If you have no other way of monitoring a website, then Website Widget is a useful tool. Other than that though, it’s very limited.
