Free-to-play retro runner
We Are Stardust is a free-to-play adventure game from indie developer Megastyle. This runner game is also a ROM file created specifically for the Commodore 64 (C64) gaming console. You play as a cybernetic warrior of some sort, running across the rooftops of a retro-futuristic world. Jump over gaps and avoid obstacles as you reach the end of your run.
Aside from the usual C64 requirements and the rather short playthrough, We Are Stardust is actually a fun game–largely thanks to its awesome soundtrack. It is quite similar to Strider or Vector.
A playable album visualization
For those unaware, We Are Stardust is also the title for the second album of chiptune and synthwave musical artist LukHash. Aside from the digitally downloadable format, the game was also released as a secret .WAV file that was included in the physical release of the album. Of course, as a C64 game, it will require a compatible emulator or even an actual copy of the console.
In terms of the story, there’s not much to expect since the game doesn’t offer any origin or objective for you to try and attain. The only thing guiding your gameplay is the awesome soundtrack. The neon-colored palette gives off strong Blade Runner vibes. It uses pixel art that captures the authentic retro experience, together with the use of chiptune music.
Lastly, the game is extremely difficult. It has a steep progression, which means that the game gets hard real fast. Provided you’re a skilled player, an entire run only takes about six minutes to complete. It’s the retries and the challenges that will extend your game time. The game also features different maneuvers, which also require a certain level of skill to master.
Stay for the music
If you’ve listened to the music of Giorgio Moroder or Daft Punk, then the sounds that accompany We Are Stardust – the game will definitely be right up your alley. The game is no pushover though, as its visuals easily make it one of the more appealing games for the modern C64 market. The game has a short playthrough, though, provided your skill level is enough to dodge all challenges.
