A surreal RPG game

THEY SPEAK FROM THE ABYSS is the demo version of a role-playing game that puts you in the middle of a cursed dimension. This horror game with low-poly graphics from TheFifthKalpa feels like a quintessential depiction of hell with its gory and disturbing set design and inhuman characters you, the player, can interact with. You’re tasked with exploring this otherworldly dimension and trying to get out.

The concepts, designs, and themes manage to make THEY SPEAK FROM THE ABYSS a thoroughly unsettling and frightening game. It will definitely leave a mark. Similar games are BITCH HELL or D*SCO (ep).

Enter the abyss

THEY SPEAK FROM THE ABYSS plays into the game where the player starts out with almost no idea of the premise or what the game is about. It starts out with a weird intro where your character wakes up in a different world. Having the player fill in the rest of the story makes it engaging, and would leave you wanting to uncover the entire picture.

Using graphics reminiscent of the first Doom game, it manages to make the entire world creepy and unsettling. It mostly uses shades of red to create that gory feel for most environments. Every step is accompanied by a squishy sound that makes it eerie and almost disgusting. Also, an aspect of the game worth mentioning is its character design. Some designs are outright Lovecraftian, adding a layer to the game.

With a game of this concept, be warned of the use of mature themes and languages that are not suitable for younger players. The game also uses dark humor built upon these themes. If you’re uncomfortable with topics of violence, gore, suffering, and supernatural depictions of these ideas, it’s better to turn away. Lastly, as a demo, expect this game to be extremely short at about 20 to 30 minutes.

A quick and creepy experience

If you’re looking for something creepy, surreal, and unexpectedly profound, THEY SPEAK FROM THE ABYSS is an unexpected entry that has the makings of a cult classic. From its set designs to the way characters are presented, you’ll have a great yet unsettling time all throughout. From the beginning to the end of its short playthrough, it’s an entire mix of emotions. Highly recommended.
