Remake of a classic arcade shooter
The House of the Dead: Remake is a premium action game made by developer MegaPixel Studio S.A. for PC. It is the official remake of the classic first-person arcade rail-shooter, The House of the Dead. In it, players will take on hordes of bio-engineered undead across multiple locations.
Similar to Killing Floor 2 or State of Decay 2, The House of the Dead: Remake will have players face off against the undead in fast-paced and thrilling shooting action. It introduces some modern graphical updates while staying faithful to the original in terms of gameplay and overall presentation.
Return to the undead house
The House of the Dead is an iconic arcade game series first introduced back in 1997. It utilized rail guns, which made the gameplay quite fun and immersive and featured multiple chapters to shoot your way through, culminating in a climactic battle against a large zombie boss. The House of the Dead: Remake is a release that attempts to capture the essence of what made the original great.
The remake didn’t change too much apart from some modern graphical updates and minor tweaks. One new addition on top of the classic story campaign is the new horde mode, which is essentially the same thing but multiplies the number of enemies by a lot. To expand the arcadey feel even more, each run will give you 10 continues—use all up and it’s game over.
The original series has characteristically been short due to its arcade nature, which favors quick gameplay bursts—the same is true for this remake. There are various unlockable paths to discover, though, which adds to its replayability and lasting appeal. Enemies can be way too “bullet spongey,” and gyro-aiming using controllers is hit and miss. A proper light gun accessory would have been great and would feel more authentic.
Mostly for nostalgia’s sake
If you’ve been a long-time fan of the original series since its early days, The House of the Dead: Remake will serve up a nice helping of nostalgia, with a fresh coat of paint and modern improvements. If this is your first foray, it will be a nice introduction to one of the most iconic and influential video games of all time. Recommended.
