Found-footage horror game
The Backrooms 1998 is a first-person game that uses the found footage style. This horror adventure game will have you play a young teen who accidentally fell into The Backrooms’ depths. What are The Backrooms? It is for you to find out.
The Backrooms 1998 is described as an escape room type of game. As titles of the genre, your goal is to escape by uncovering various hidden things. However, typical of the genre, a monster waits to pounce on you when you make sudden noise. Players should note that the game comes with disturbing footage.
What is The Backrooms 1998?
The Backrooms 1998 is a psychological horror game that takes you to the depths—or rather lets you explore labyrinths.Played from the first-person’s perspective, you will roam the dark map to unravel the story. You will also uncover hidden things to escape the nightmarish world. Of course, this will not be as easy as it sounds. There is a monster inside the back rooms that hears everything.
While you can roam freely, this game is built around silence and slow movements. As noted, the monster hears everything. And as the map is dark, you might knock over objects or step on glass. More than the antagonist, there are also various jump scares that attract noise. However, you can turn off the jump scares setting—the coward option—if this is not your thing.
You don’t have to worry as the game gives you tools you can use. You can use a spray gun to mark your path. With this, you can avoid getting lost. Mind your stamina, however, as you can only use a limited amount. More than that, there is a limited save system. Exceed them, and you will be a permanent resident of the back rooms.
Visually scary game
Gameplay-wise, there is nothing new to The Backrooms 1998. However, what makes it good is its sheer size and creepiness of the maze, aka the Backrooms. Its visuals are very strong, especially the retro found-footage scenes. Add in 1990s VCR/VHS sounds, and you have a very scary retro game. However, there are too many jump scares that limit the immersion of the game.
