A powerful text editor for programmers
Probably the final frontier that Apple has yet to conquer is a truly innovative text editor.
TextMate, although principally designed at programmers, is an attempt to apply Apple Mac elegance and intuitiveness to the text editing world. Whether you are a programmer or a designer, TextMate aims to make writing code as comfortable, approachable, and non repetitive as possible.
TextMate has been created by a UNIX developer exclusively for the Mac so it’s tailored to make the most out of the Mac’s capabilities and design aesthetics. It’s absolutely packed with features among which are the possibility to search and replace text and code, auto-indent for common actions such as pasting text, auto-pairing of brackets and other characters and auto-completions of words.
However, if you look for opinions amongst developers who have used TextMate, they won’t all sing it’s praises. Some consider it inferior to something like the more expensive SlickEdit and long standing efforts such as jEdit. Most are united in opinion though that if you liked Emacs, then you’ll probably love TextMate.
TextMate is lightweight, fast and relatively easy to use for a programming text editor and could save you hours of sweat by streamlining and automating your most common programming tasks.
