Atmospheric retro puzzle game for PC
Tenebra is a free puzzle game for PC by indie developer Haplo. It’s an atmospheric retro title that features 8-bit graphics and a minimalistic black & white aesthetic. In it, players need to escape maze-like levels with a unique gameplay mechanic utilizing light and field of vision.
Just like with Snow Wars and Project Paradroid, Tenebra is a game that was made with the classic Commodore 64/128 systems in mind. This is a demo version that will work on both PAL and NTSC machines, with a planned release period by the end of 2021.
What is it about and how do I play it?
First things first, Tenebra was developed for the Commodore 64 and 128 systems. As such, make sure you have working and compatible hardware/emulators for it to work properly. The game is described as an atmospheric puzzle game that will have you control a hapless character as you make your way out of dark maze-like levels. There’s a catch, though. You can only move around areas where there is light.
Each stage in Tenebra is black and white and will only have portions lit and visible with fireplaces. It’s your task to navigate your way within these areas as you find the exit. Torches will be scattered throughout; you can pick one up and take along with you as you move, essentially lighting your path and expanding your field of vision until you see a way out.
For some added challenge and complexity, some levels will feature cracked walls that you can squeeze through and locked doors that will require keys to open. As mentioned earlier, this is just a demo version that you can try out. The game is still in active development, and more changes will come in future updates as it makes its way towards an official release.
A simple and charming puzzler
Tenebra is another great addition to the list of games that were made for the Commodore 64 and 128 systems. It features retro 8-bit graphics, simple yet charming presentation, and a unique gameplay premise. If you’re looking for a new game to check out for your C64 or C128 emulators, give this one a try. As this is still in active development, you can expect new exciting additions.
