This Surah is the second of the ten “Heart-shaped” Surahs. It has the same title as the previous one because it contains the words “Ilah”, “God” and “Qur’an” in its original text. It is a “makki” Surah because it has five ayah and is long.
The Surah begins by introducing the concept of the word “Ilah” in its original text. It is an Arabic word which means “God”. The whole word is used to describe God in His attributes and characteristics. The first word “Ilah” is mentioned in the Qur’an as the first of the 36 “Heavenly” words. The second word “God” is used to describe the God in His supreme and full attributes.
The Surah continues to describe God’s attributes and characteristics in different ways. It also introduces the concept of the Day of Judgment and the resurrection. It is mentioned in the Qur’an that on the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered in different groups and will be judged according to their deeds.
The last part of this Surah contains the teaching of Islam and is very valuable. It is mentioned in the Qur’an that Muslims must believe in the existence of God, His messenger and His laws.
