Modern reinvention of a classic maze game

Super Bomberman R 2 is an action-oriented maze game with an emphasis on multiplayer gameplay. It forms part of the long-standing Bomberman franchise and serves as a direct follow-up to Super Bomberman R and Super Bomberman R Online. However, players are not required to have played previous games in the series.

Aside from other entries in the Bomberman series, Super Bomberman R 2 most closely resembles other classic maze games, like Pac-Man. However, Super Bomberman R 2’s multiplayer focus and emphasis on action sets it apart.

Classic Bomberman fun

For those unfamiliar with the wider Bomberman series, the core gameplay involves navigating a two-dimensional grid with horizontal and vertical navigation. You can use bombs to destroy obstacles and eliminate other players. These enemies can be AI-controlled or other real players.

Super Bomberman R 2 does not attempt to reinvent the wheel, sticking to this tried and tested gameplay loop. Classic game modes with established Bomberman rules all return. However, it does introduce some new ideas while refining the gameplay, controls, and overall presentation.

Attackers vs. defenders

Super Bomberman R 2 is a full entry in the Bomberman series, so it is not free-to-play like Super Bomberman R Online. Nevertheless, there is plenty of content to justify the price, including a new Story mode and Stage Editor, allowing players to create their own stages or download other player-created Bomberman stages.

So, how does Super Bomberman R 2 compare to Super Bomberman R? It is primarily an evolution of the established formula with some revisions, including the new ‘Castle’ game mode, which sees players divided into attackers and defenders. In this sense, it can be seen as a clear upgrade over Super Bomberman R.

Nostalgic, multiplayer mayhem

For fans of the series and those looking for multiplayer mayhem, Super Bomberman R 2 has plenty to offer, including the new ‘Castle’ game mode. While Story mode lacks replay value, it also provides much-needed single-player content.
