A Skyrim mod for improving the quality of in-game objects
Static Mesh Improvement Mod – SMIM is a free mod for Skyrim that increases the detail quality of static object graphics in the game. It achieves this by replacing low-quality textures and meshes with more detailed versions. The mod includes over 900 replacement meshes. That equates to around 30,000 placements in the game.
SMIM is a mod pack for Skyrim’s core gameplay and is not an official add-on offered by the game’s developers. Instead, the mod was made using SaaS programs, such as the Nexus mod Creation Kit. Unfortunately, tech support is a bit of a hit or miss since the modding community handles this rather than the game’s developer.
Improves static meshes
Static meshes are the underlying geometry of the in-game object graphics that do not move. While Skyrim is an expansive game, it doesn’t have the best reputation for quality graphics. SMIM aims to improved graphics by swapping some low-quality static meshes with high-fidelity replacements.
Many replacement textures
In addition to the static mesh replacements, SMIM also replaces the textures used to alter the meshes. If you’re already using a texture replacer mod, it is important to note that these SMIM meshes are not compatible with textures intended for the plain-vanilla game.
A minimal hit on performance
One reason for Skyrim’s low-quality models is due to the performance benefits that it aims to provide. However, the precise difference in performance depends on other factors, including the hardware you use. Regardless, the performance hit caused by SMIM is very minimal small. Many gamers with high-end systems have reported no discernable differences.
Subtle visual improvements
The difference between the vanilla meshes and enhanced SMIM meshes is relatively stark. Plus, it’s mostly just background objects. That means you may not notice any differences unless you pay attention to the game’s details.
