Free crossover mod for FreeSpace 2

Star Fox: Event Horizon Mod is a free-to-use game utility created by the Parallel Process team. This crossover mod combines the space-themed simulator FreeSpace 2 with the classic space-shooting video game franchise, Star Fox. With that said, however, it focuses more on the fast-paced space dogfights that the classic Nintendo franchise is known for.

With the Star Fox characters and fighter craft now available, Star Fox: Event Horizon makes itself a fun add-on both for longtime players of FreeSpace and those looking for a new Star Fox experience, despite remaining dated in terms of visuals and animation altogether.

Meet the Star Fox Command

The best part about Star Fox: Event Horizon Mod is that it brings most of the characters from the Star Fox franchise. Play as or against Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad. Each of the pilots has their custom Arwings, or the flight crafts used by these characters. There is also a host of supporting characters, all available as talking 3D portraits.

Combining the Star Fox content into the FreeSpace 2 engine is where things get creative. Built using Freespace Open, the free and open-source platform for creating custom content, the Event Horizon mod is rendered in smooth 3D. It feels like a game that is years ahead of either game. While not as expansive or as detailed as Warframe, its draw on both FreeSpace and Star Fox franchises makes it relatable.

As a standalone mod, you can play this massive experience for entirely free without having to purchase or install FreeSpace 2 or any other app. However, it might warrant some preparation since the game requires over 4 GB of storage. However, as an active development by a small team, it’s still filled with game-crashing bugs that are mostly intermittent and caused by incompatibility issues.

Keeping both franchises alive

It is safe to say that with Star Fox: Event Horizon Mod, both the FreeSpace and the Star Fox franchises are kept alive. Through this standalone mod, players from both bases are treated to an amazing experience that combines the strategy of the former and the fast-paced dogfights of the latter. You can even consider it a separate game altogether, with a larger-than-usual storage requirement and its standalone nature.
