A good starting point for amateur DJs
SPDJ Studio 54 Edition (or SP DJ01 Studio 54 BCN Ed) is a DJing tool that can be downloaded for free. It is designed for DJs, allowing them to mix music and different effects.
Not only for total newbies
SPDJ Studio 54 Edition lets you mix two tracks which you can select from folders on your computer. Once you’ve selected the tracks, you just have to drag them to the mixing table and start experimenting.
This virtual DJ has options like Scratch, Effects, Auto Loop, AutoMix… Everything an amateur DJ needs. But that’s also where it stops.
SPDJ Studio 54 Edition is a good program for beginners but not for more advanced users. When compared to similar software such as Virtual DJ or Traktor, SPDJ Studio 54 Edition is very limited. You can only mix two tracks while the competitors allow you to mix up to four. Also, you can only select music from your computer while Traktor enables you to import playlists from iTunes.
The mixing possibilities are also very limited. If you’ve just entered the world of DJing you might find it enough, but with time you’ll grow out of this program.
Old-fashioned design
SPDJ Studio 54 Edition’s interface and design are old-fashioned. For example, the mixing table is too small, with the program placing too much importance on the playlist.
The UI color also leaves much to be desired. A DJ can spend hours “playing” with his or her latest creation, so the last thing they want is to spend that time staring at a painfully bright red.
My first virtual DJ
SPDJ Studio 54 Edition could be named “my first virtual DJ”. As it’s free, it’s suitable for finding out whether you really like the world of mixing. But, if you find yourself enjoying it, you’ll soon want to get a taste of more advanced programs such as Traktor or Torq. If you are already an expert, SP DJ01 isn’t what you’re looking for.
