Retro 8-bit racing game for PC
Space Racing is a free racing title for PC that was created by indie developer Voxel Tower. Set in the distant future, billionaires of the time devised a new form of entertainment based on the old race sport known as Formula 1, only the stake are higher and more dangerous.
Space Racing joins the likes of The Last Escape and Yanga in the ever-growing list of games being made for the classic ZX Spectrum personal home computer. It features the same 8-bit graphics and distinct color palette that fans have come to love and expect.
What’s it all about?
Space Racing is set in the year 2560 where humanity has spread throughout the universe, establishing contact, exchanging culture, and trading technologies with various species and races. The billionaires of the time grew bored of their current way of life, and so they devised a new form of entertainment that is based on the old racing sport of Formula 1. Their vision of it is far more deadly, though.
In Space Racing, you enter a Grand Prix consisting of 8 circuits. You must finish in the top three to progress. If you fail to do so or your ship explodes, you lose your life. You will only have 3 lives to help you finish the tournament and claim the grand prize. There will also be deadly traps spread throughout to up the danger.
While racing, there are 8 zones that you’ll pass through that will have various effects on your vehicle. Some will offer speed boosts and fortify your shields. Meanwhile, others will slow you down, fry your systems, or push you out of the track. You’ll be experiencing a slight difficulty curve at the start, but you’ll gradually get the hang of it as you go along.
A rare racing experience
All in all, Space Racing is a unique entry in a space where most games being made for the ZX Spectrum are of the platformer or RPG variety. It will be a challenge to get used to the gameplay at first, but stick with it and you’ll have a lot of fun in no time. If you’re into racing games, this is worth checking out.
