SONIC AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES  -TOKYO 2020™ is a free-to-start sports game published by SEGA Games Co., Ltd. The game is part of the official video game line up of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Here, Sonic and his friends head to Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Their plans to enjoy the trip are put on hold when they discover that Dr. Eggman is keeping the city hostage. It is up to you to investigate the doctor’s nefarious plan from happening. At the same time, you must participate in sixteen Olympic sports and six minigames.

Sonic the Olympian

Before Tokyo 2020, SEGA released Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, followed by Sonic at the Olympic Games. Both were released in 2008. In Sonic AT Tokyo 2020 Olympics, you can choose to play 1 of 16 Sonic the Hedgehog characters, which consist of Sonic, his friends, and his enemies. Note that even as an enemy, the game follows the same story. The goal is to stop Dr. Eggman’s plan to interrupt the Olympic Games. Along the way, you must participate in sporting events.

Otherwise called EX Events, you must compete in 16 different sports such as 400m Hurdles, 100m dash, Hammer Throw, etc. Each sport follows the same rules as its real-life sporting counterpart. This will enable you to experience the action and mindset of the actual players. In addition, you can play the minigames such as the Tokyo Skytree Jump, Numer Lock, and Claw Game. All six minigames are based off popular tourist attractions in Tokyo, so this gives you the experience of being out and about in Japan.

Gotta go fast!

The game continues to mimic the Olympics through world rankings. The game tracks your personal score, your friends’ scores, and the points of players from around the world. For every sport you play, you can see your position, country of origin, username, and final score. The score will depend on the unit being measured in the game. For example, 400m hurdles are measured in seconds and minutes.

The app also gathers the scores of all players per country. This allows you to see the total number of points each country has gathered. For example, the United States, Great Britain, and China are in first, second, and third place respectively. Next to each country’s name is its raw score and its percentage out of one-hundred percent. There’s no way of communicating with other players from your country, but it gives you a perspective on how well players fare against each other on a worldwide scale.
