Pixel art creation tool for PC

SLK_img2pixel is a free and open-source graphic and design program for PC that was created by an independent developer named Lukas Holzbeierlein, also known as Captain4LK. It is an image editor that allows users to take their existing photos and transform them into pixel art.

Similar to other pixel art creation tools like Aseprite or mtPaint, SLK_img2pixel is a utility that allows for the easy creation of pixel art based on your photo. It uses palettes with various color effects and profiles to suit your liking and offers tools to adjust the pixel effect in your images, as well.

How do I use SLK_img2pixel?

SLK_img2pixel is a portable utility that you can run and start using immediately. Its UI has an old-school look to it, with a blocky and high-contrast design. There are two separate windows for settings and preview. Select the former and see five main tabs to navigate through. Use the Save/Load tab first to add an image or save a project later on.

Head to the Palette tab to start modifying your colors by adjusting the sliders. img2pixel supports various distribution systems and other palette profiles. For more options, the General section is where you can resize your image, apply filters, or adjust dithering effects and alpha settings. Then, the Process tab has sliders to control contrast, sharpness, and others.

Lastly, the Special tab at the bottom is for loading and saving GIFs. On to other things, and there are some aspects in SLK_img2pixel that could use more work. For one, the overall speed and performance of the utility are slow and leave a lot to be desired. Another is that it is missing a rather basic drag-and-drop function to import new images.

Transform your images into works of pixel art

All in all, SLK_img2pixel is a fun and interesting little utility that fans of retro and pixel art will find a lot to like about. It’s open-source, portable, and easy to use. Plus, its set of editing tools, support for various distribution systems, and color palettes will allow for plenty of different effects and combinations
