First-person dungeon-crawling card game
Shroom and Gloom is an indie game developed by TeamLazerBeam. This free-play game combines dungeon-crawler and deck-building on one platform. Here, you will descend into an unknown world filled with mushrooms and madness.
Shroom and Gloom is similar to the card game Slay the Spire. You will build decks of cards, which you can use to defeat enemies you meet on your quest. You will also collect cards with higher damage output. However, despite its simple premise, the game is actually hard to complete. You will end up dying a lot as you try to finish the quest.
What is Shroom and Gloom?
In Shroom and Gloom, players will explore a dark and mushroom-filled world called The Underealm. Here, your goal is to make your way through the depths until you reach The Void King. However, hard-drawn monsters and murderous mushrooms are blocking your way. So, armed with cards, you will have to fight your way through terrifying Terry’s, enchanting Bardshrooms, and otherworldly Pizza Blobs as you try to reach your goal.
As with other card-collection games, your deck will start small. It will also have little damage output. But as you play along, you can modify them to reach the level of abomination. You can even combine cards to defeat enemies instantly. However, the cards you use for an attack will no longer be available the next time. Moreover, some cards are not that useful. Additionally, getting maximum HP takes ages.
Besides combat, the game also uses deck-building for its exploration gameplay. You will create a second deck that will determine how you traverse The Underealm. You can use your cards for scrounging for keys or for simply bashing down locked doors. It is up to you to decide. However, as mentioned, despite the premise being easy to learn, its difficulty level is high, making the game hard to complete.
Is the game good?
Overall, Shroom and Gloom is a must-play rouge-like card game. It has insanely fun combat, made more interesting by the addition of exploration gameplay. It also boasts of a unique aesthetic of hand-drawn maps and enemies. Although, despite its easy-to-learn mechanics, its difficulty level is quite high. You will spend ages trying to defeat the big boss. However, this makes up for the short runtime that the game actually has.
