A soul-searching adventure game
SacriFire is a single-player indie RPG adventure game inspired by classics like Vagrant Story and Xenogears. It was brought to the masses via a Kickstarter campaign and is available for PS4 & 5, XB1 & XSX, Switch, and Windows platforms.
Developed by Pixelated Milk, the makers of Warsaw and Regalia: of Men and Monarchs, comes another 2D RPG game in the anime style of Another Eden. It features music by Motoi Sakuraba and a mixture of real-time and turn-based combat.
What’s it about?
This JRPG-inspired game traces Ezekiel Ridan’s travels between the underground tunnels of the city of Antioch and the bucolic world of spirits, Erebus. In this tale of two worlds, this young soldier trains to join a sect called the Church of Sheol so that he may protect Antioch but soon finds that his beliefs and moral foundation are flawed.
What’s special about it?
In this anime-style RPG, players adopt diverse combat tactics, craft weapons, and solve puzzles in an environment that combines science fiction and fantasy. No two fights are the same. Upgrades, custom tactics, and strategy changes are a must for exploiting enemy weaknesses and winning. Players who counter all three of an enemy’s affinities can annihilate them with a single blow.
How does fighting work?
As a soldier of the Church of Sheol, the player fights demons using DIVOS- “one weapon to smite them all.” DIVOS gauntlets can turn into ‘astras’ and challenge the demonic plague known as ‘Heresy.’ Through battles and trials, new capabilities are unlocked, turning gauntlets into swords, spears, hammers, crossbows, and chakrams.
Contemporary RPG with nostalgic undertones
A JRPG-inspired game with great visuals and masterfully crafted music, SacriFire has a lot going for it, though the whole religious fight theme is a bit cliché. Thus, it is not likely to stir much emotion in most players.
