A roguelike platformer game with no enemy

Ruggnar is a premium action game for PC by developer Sword N’ Wands. It is a 2D platformer that follows the adventures of a dwarf in a world where there are no enemies. Instead of enemies, players will face the perils of dangerous environments ridden with deadly traps at every turn.

Compared to other titles like Terraria or Dead Cells, Ruggnar takes a different approach to gameplay that is more like a PvE (player vs. environment) experience without the combat. It will have to deal with the unpredictability and danger that each of the game’s locations will bring.

You against the world

The game follows the story of the titular Ruggnar, a dwarf adventurer. On his journey, he hears rumors of abandoned places with valuable treasures just waiting to be looted. Equipped with nothing more than his bag of tools and some candles, he sets on a new adventure to make his fortune. However, he will soon find out that things are not as simple as they first seem.

In this game, there are no enemies and you will instead contend with the dangers of the places you’ll visit. These dungeon-like locations are pitch black, and you need your candles to light the way either by carrying them or throwing them to see if there are any traps nearby—which is often the case. Be sure to pick them up after as there are only a few that you have.

Along the way, you will be able to collect various armors and helmets hidden away, as well as visit merchants that sell ancient grimoires. Use these items to level up your gear and even color your beard (yes, really). The gameplay itself is on the easy side, and this contributes to the overall experience, which is rather short. Hopefully, future updates will bring in more content.

Light the way

If you’re big into 2D platformers and are looking for something a little different to try out, Ruggnar is worth considering. Its PvE-like approach to gameplay might be odd at first, but the experience is quite fun and engaging. The graphics are nice and the quirky character is fun to watch. This is a game that pretty much anyone can enjoy. Just don’t expect it to last for very long.
