Endless runner with little charm and some Ronaldo
Ronaldo & Hugo: Superstar Skaters is yet another endless runner, like Temple Run or the recent Lara Croft: Relic Run.
Endless endless runners
The premise of Ronaldo & Hugo: Superstar Skaters, is that Hugo the troll and soccer star Ronaldo, who are ‘old friends’, have to escape the paparazzi in Las Vegas. On Skateboards, for no particular reason, except allowing developer Hugo Games to describe this as an ‘extreme endless skater’. You control the two stars with various swipes on your screen as they run or skate along the game’s courses, performing slides, jumps, grinds, and more.
If you’d like a great example of lazy branding, Ronaldo & Hugo: Superstar Skaters is pretty good. Ronaldo has no reason to be in this game, which just uses his likeness, without any reference to soccer and without any particular charm. I was not aware Ronaldo is a keen skater. The game would be the same without Ronaldo’s name or face in it.
Ronaldo, ‘why am I here?’
Of course, lazy game tie-ins are nothing new, and would not be a problem if Ronaldo & Hugo: Superstar Skaters was an impressive game. It’s not. The above mentioned Temple Run and Lara Croft: Relic Run are much better. Gameplay is nothing special, although the graphics are pretty good. However, it takes a long time to load, and has a tendency to crash during loading.
It’s a competent endless runner, with the same controls as pretty much every game in the genre. You skate, and sometimes run, with Ronaldo or Hugo through Las Vegas, avoiding obstacles along the way.
Try a different game
If you’re a particular fan of Ronaldo, perhaps a Ronaldo themed endless-skater game might appeal to you. But for most people, there’s little to recommend here. Ronaldo & Hugo: Superstar Skaters is a mediocre game, in a genre filled with much better ones!
