Ooo, a game that makes keeping time an adventure
There has always been a nice musical theme to Finn and Jake’s exploits, so a rhythm game seems like the perfect addition to the slew of Adventure Time mobile apps. Rockstars of Ooo – Adventure Time is a remarkably solid music experience too, though it does suffer from being a tad short.
Everybody shoot Oooooo
Divided into six areas, Rockstars of Ooo – Adventure Time keeps itself fresh. You can move between areas whenever you chose, with each treating you to a different kind of beat-based gameplay themed around specific episodes from the show.
In truth each game type is basically a call and response – think a musical Simon Says but with varying degrees of beat and visual aids. My favorite areas perfectly demonstrate how the gameplay can differ, What Was Missing and BMO Noire. Both begin with a simple tutorial, but where in BMO Noire you just have to match beats to instructions (one tap, two taps, pause and tap), What Was Missing demands that you repeat exactly what was just played.
The second of these becomes notably more complex as the beat chains grow in length, and actually proved the one time in the whole game I failed a stage. With few clear auditory or visual hints, it can prove a real test of memory and rhythm.
Ooo, Ooo, Ooo
Fortunately, the tap based gameplay is responsive and forgiving. This is probably because, with much of the game based around a call and response system, the window of time given for a Perfect hit is larger than you would see in a rhythm game with more visual cues.
While this can make some sections too easy, in others it proves a welcome crutch. This is perfect for younger or less experienced players but, if you are paying attention and are familiar with the genre, you will find yourself with an A Ranking in more than half of the game’s 30 levels on your first attempt.
For all of Rockstars of Ooo – Adventure Time’s various gameplay hiccups, the fun really lies in how it draws on the show. Though there is no vocal work (a common complaint for all of the mobile Adventure Time games), the visual presentation does a good job making up for this recreating the every character and environment just as it appeared in the show.
Finn-ish
It not hard to breeze through the game’s 30 stages in an hour if you don’t feel compelled to A Rank everything. That is not the fun of Rockstars of Ooo – Adventure Time though, it’s all about the characters and reliving your favorite musical moments. While it would be nice to actually have some clips from the show, or vocal work from the cast to frame the action, the rest of the presentation is top notch. Perfect for Adventure Time fans.
