Execution for raising taxes too much!
Reign of Kings, currently in its early access phase, is planned to be the ultimate medieval simulator. “I’ve heard that far too often over the last few months”, you’re saying. To which we answer: in how many other games of that style can you execute users or villagers for complaining that you’ve raised taxes too much?
Rust + Medieval Warfare + Medieval monarchy
Reign of Kings is an online sandbox based on a mix of various concepts. On the one hand we have a fighting style like Chivalry Medieval Warfare: brutal, fast, personal and violent close combat. On the other hand we have a complex but very complete system of recollection and creation of Rust items. Finally, we have the monarchic system of the Middle Ages, the era in which the game is set.
The result of joining all these ideas is so complex and unpredictable that it’s hard to summarize in one sentence. Do you just want to collect material to build yourself a little house? Go ahead. Do you want to join other players in hunting down villains and enemies? You have our blessing. Do you want to besiege fortresses and watch your catapulted rocks destroy the surroundings? We won’t stop you.
Now let’s add to the possibilities. In Reign of Kings you can, for example, capture other players and drag them along the floor with a rope until you reach the gallows, guillotine or any other torture method that takes your fancy.
Here is where a Game of Thrones joke would come in
One of the main features of the Reign of Kings will be the interior struggle to become king. The Old Throne can be conquered by any player and it guarantees him/her power over the whole map that is being played in. He/she can raise or lower taxes for users as well as for characters, and there is also access to special weapons.
We repeat: the Old Throne can be conquered by anyone. Your plan to usurp the previous king’s throne might have worked well, but now you’ll be the victim. You’ll have to find a bodyguard and be alert to danger that can come from anywhere; raise the taxes too much and it might be the villagers who want your head on the end of a spear.
Reign of Kings is still in its Early Access phase on Steam, and you can tell. The characters are robotic, there is still a lot of content to add, there are lots of mistakes… But the current state of the game is very promising.
Reign of Kings will have to battle other candidates for the throne of the medieval simulator subgenre. Let’s not forget that the new Besiege and Medieval Engineers have also given us much to talk about. No matter who becomes the victor, we already have a winning group: the fans.
