Reduce and reuse with this free app
Refill is a free city guide tool that allows you to find locations near you that provide services to lessen the use of single-use plastics. Refill at City to Sea developed this app to help promote a more eco-friendly lifestyle by encouraging users to make use of reusable containers.
Like Water App and Tap, you can use Refill to find water refilling stations for your reusable water bottle. It provides a detailed map that lets you pinpoint the type of service you need. You can even track the number of carbon emissions you’ve saved with these services within the app.
Easy-to-navigate map
In order to connect you to a wider network of refilling stations, Refill shows you up to 274,000 different locations. The map even lets you narrow down your search to a specific store type for easier navigation. The available store types include cafes, individual retailers, as well as restaurants. You’ll also be able to find stores that provide discounts or promos when you bring your own container.
If you happen to know of a nearby public water fountain, you can also manually add the location and share it with other users. This way, the database can continue to grow and provide users with more areas for you to visit. You can also begin your own refilling scheme in your area in order to reach more people who may be nearby, as well.
It is important to note, however, that the app becomes quite laggy when opening the map for the first time. You will have to wait out the loading screen for some time, even when you reopen the app. They will also repeatedly display prompts, asking you to sign up for an account even when you choose the option to simply explore the app first.
Great for building communities
Refill provides an admirable avenue for its users to find new ways to limit their use of plastic waste. The app focuses on creating a community that shares the same goals and wants to encourage others to create a change, as well. There are some improvements to be made when it comes to the user experience, but there is still much to appreciate about the app.
