Retro side-scrolling shooter for PC

RANBLE is a free arcade game for PC made by an independent developer named Kevin Phillips, also known as KevMan3D. It is a 2D side-scrolling shooter that was made for the ZX Spectrum Next. It was inspired by Scamble, a space-themed arcade game that was released back in the 1980s.

Similar to GradiusR-Type, or Storm Assualt, RANBLE serves as a homage to the classics that helped popularized side-scrolling space shooters back in the day. It features retro-style graphics reminiscent of those titles, complete with that distinct neon color palette and old-school sound effects.

How do I play it?

First and foremost, RANBLE is all about the action and doesn’t feature any kind of story or narrative. In it, you take control of a fighter-bomber who goes on wreaking havoc all around. You will be facing various enemy ships speeding at you, while missiles will be fired from below. You must destroy or avoid them for as long as you can.

To makes it more challenging, you also need to consider your fuel reserves. It will slowly deplete as you’re flying and the only way to refuel is to bomb fuel tanks that you will come across. It won’t be a simple task, though, as they are usually situated next to missile launch pads, which attack you. The terrain will also become an obstacle as hitting will mean your destruction.

There are 4 levels in total that seamlessly connect to one another that you can play using either your keyboard or joystick. You even get a Top 5 score table to aim for during each play session. Speaking of play sessions, while this game provides you with a nice sense of nostalgia and enjoyment, it can get repetitive after a while.

Fun and challenging

RANBLE is a nice trip down memory lane for anyone who grew up playing those classic side-scrolling space shooters back in the day. There’s no denying the sense of fun and nostalgia that it brings to fans of old-school classics like Scramble, Gradius, or R-Type. If you have some time to spare, this game is worth playing whether you’re a newcomer or a long-time fan.
