To siege or be sieged
Ubisoft Montreal developed Rainbow Six Siege as a premium tactical shooter video game. With a strong focus on environmental destruction and cooperative gameplay, this title offers an immersive experience for players. Engaging in various gameplay modes, each participant takes on the role of either an attacker or a defender, lending an exciting dynamic to the gameplay.
Rainbow Six Siege immerses players in a captivating first-person shooter experience, where they harness the power of diverse operators within the esteemed Rainbow team. Players are equipped with various strategic options, with each operator boasting unique nationalities, gadgets, and weapons.
The three Ts
On top of creating tight FPS gameplay, Ubisoft Montreal has had three main focuses throughout Rainbow Six Siege´s development, teamwork, tactics, and tension.
Set on tight maps with destructible environments, each round of this game follows the same basic formula of one Counter Terrorism team trying to thwart a team of Terrorists, or at least that’s what you’ll call them—they are another Special Ops team with defensive skills. While the five-on-five action ensures the numbers are balanced, their goals and classes differ. This creates asymmetrical play, which keeps each team guessing.
This demands that sides plan out their tactics in advance—working out which character classes to equip before each round. As an additional layer to this planning, before beginning the assault, there is a phase during which the Rainbow Six team can recon the area to plan their attack while another team improves their defenses.
So that is Teamwork and Tactics covered, but Tension is harder to pin down. Luckily Ubisoft has some obvious ideas for achieving this third pillar of development.
Plan and attack
One part of this is the duration of the matches. Short bouts seem key, with the team vs. multiplayer games only lasting about three minutes a round.
The asymmetric gameplay is also designed to keep you guessing. The beta, for example, had The Rainbow Six teams having to rescue hostages from a house. Not knowing the hostages’ location but knowing that time is tight, the team has to use surveillance techniques to identify hostages’ locations. While this happens, the terrorists can secure doors, reinforce walls, and cover windows to slow the assault.
The maps are small, with many verticalities to balance the Counter-Terrorist team’s lack of knowledge. This allows for multiple entry points, such as windows you can ascend down to and walls you can destroy to create new, unseen routes to the target.
To accompany the competitive multiplayer, teams can also take on waves of terrorists in the Terrorist Hunt mode. This sees your team try to disarm bombs while terrorists swim you in waves trying and stop you. However, the progression system can often feel sluggish and complex, leading to frustration during grinding.
New Operator Archetypes in Action
This year’s Rainbow is Magic event introduces three new archetypes for the participating Operators—Speedy, Stronk, and Flexy. Each archetype comes with a unique ability and a teddy bear grenade. Speedy Operators have the Remah Dash ability and stun teddy bear grenades; Stronk Operators are equipped with a shield and smoke teddy bear grenade. At the same time, Flexy Operators receive the adrenal surge ability and explosive teddy bear grenade.
Cosmetic Items and Bundles
The Rainbow is Magic Collection offers a variety of new and returning cosmetic items to celebrate the event throughout the year. Players can earn free packs by participating in the event, and additional packs can be purchased with Renown or R6 credits. Exclusive bundles for newcomers Buck and Kaid and veterans Sledge and Thatcher are available in the store for R6 credits. Bundles for Blackbeard, Smoke, Montagne, and Tachanka are also offered. To further enhance the gaming experience, an exclusive drone skin can be found in the Signature Pack.
Operation Dread Factor season
Operation Dread Factor introduces the highly anticipated character Fenrir, who can be unlocked during gameplay. With the addition of Fenrir, players gain access to the formidable F-NATT Dread Mine, a powerful tool for creating fear-inducing areas of denial. This throwable device can be strategically hidden on walls, allowing fear to thrive in unsuspecting locations. Fenrir possesses five mines and can activate up to three at any time, granting players versatility across the entire map.
This season introduces five exciting arcade game modes—Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Golden Gun, Headshots Only, and Snipers Only.
There’s also the latest addition at the shooting range: the Aiming Lane, designed to enhance players’ weapon testing experience. This innovative lane allows players to gauge how the recoil and damage of various weapons interact with moving targets, providing valuable insights into their performance in dynamic in-game scenarios. Furthermore, players can now explore the Damage Lane, featuring a breakable wall, to evaluate the destructive power of different weapons and assess the damage inflicted on structures. This comprehensive upgrade enables players to fine-tune and experiment with their custom aiming options in real-time while better understanding the weapons’ capabilities.

Rainbow Six Siege immerses players in an environment of environmental destruction and cooperative gameplay. With diverse game modes, strategic teamwork and planning are essential for success. The game’s short, tension-filled matches, asymmetrical gameplay, and intricately designed maps with verticality add to its appeal.
