VPN from the makers of Proton Mail
Proton VPN: Fast & Secure is a free VPN application from developer Proton AG. It is the official mobile VPN client of the same name and was made by the same team of CERN scientists who created the popular privacy-focused end-to-end encrypted email service called Proton Mail.
Just like X-VPN and SKY VPN, Proton VPN: Fast & Secure comes with a free-tier plan that users can try to see if it will suit their needs. However, they can also choose from monthly or annual subscription options that will unlock more features and offer better speeds if they wish.
Made by scientists
Proton Mail is an e-mail service that features end-to-end data encryption and cross-platform compatibility. It was a great option for those who value privacy and security and what made it even more interesting was it was made by scientists from CERN, one of the most respected centers for scientific research. Proton VPN: Fast & Secure is another one of their creations and it carries the same privacy-centric philosophy.
This VPN comes with your standard set of features including AES-256 encryption to keep your data safe, coupled with OpenVPN protocol to reroute traffic, and keep you anonymous while also granting you access to blocked, region-specific websites and services anywhere in the world. There’s also a no data-logging policy in place, which a lot of users will appreciate for added peace of mind.
Additionally, it features DNS leak protection to keep your browsing activity private, as well as an automatic kill switch option in case of sudden disconnections or power outages. Unfortunately, the experience of using the service is less than ideal and leaves a lot to be desired. It suffers from connection stability issues that often result in frequent disconnections. This is compounded by the fact that reconnecting is as difficult.
Falls short of the Proton name
If you’re a fan of Proton Mail and were hoping to have a similarly good experience with Proton VPN: Fast & Secure, that unfortunately is not the case. It comes with a solid set of features for being a free VPN service, but the connection issues result in a very inconsistent and unreliable experience. Until they’re addressed, you’re better off trying something else.
