A classic Commodore 64 game, remade for your PC
Project Paradroid is a faithful remake of the 1985 Commodore 64 game Paradroid. The back story is that you’ve had reports indicating a spacecraft has been taken over by mutinous droids. A droid “influence device” has been sent aboard to restore order. You control the device.
To restore order, you must clear the ship of droids. There are two ways to do this, by shooting them, or by “influencing” them, which means taking them over. Shooting is straight forward, but hold the action key, and your droid goes into “transfer mode”. Bump into an enemy droid now, and you enter a kind of puzzle mini game, where you have to take over the mind of the other droid.
Your 001 droid is fairly weak, and the higher number droid you face, the stronger they will be. So, you can increase your power by taking over droids, and moving up the food chain. When you clear a level, the lights dim, and you can move to the next.
There has never really been anything like Paradroid, even though it received rave reviews upon its release. The graphics in Project Paradroid have been updated, and look good, although veterans might miss the original bas-relief style. Thankfully, the great original sound effects have been kept. It’s strangely atmospheric, and difficult to stop once you get into it.
Project Paradroid will have certainly please fans of the original, one of the most compelling, and well balanced video games ever made. Highly recommended.
