App that gives information on the surrounding landscape
Those interested in mountaineering and sightseeing will never find themselves short of information with PeakVisor, this useful app supplies vital information on peaks in the user’s vicinity, such as altitude, the name of each peak and its position relative to the user. This is all achieved just by pointing phone at the horizon!
How it Works
PeakVisor uses the phone’s location and camera to augment the camera’s view with a virtual skyline, this outlines each peak, displaying its name and total elevation in metres. To use the app, users simply open it and point the phone at the landscape, this automatically cross-references the phone’s location with the information on the locality to produce a ‘heads-up display’ of superimposed information. The app also shows the sun, and its path over the horizon, along with a hi-tech compass at the bottom of the screen. All shots can be downloaded and shared with the information superimposed on screen, downloads can also be viewed offline, so the app is still usable in remote locations with no connectivity. The app supports panoramic 3D pictures, enabling users to capture every nuance of their location, along with the key information on the surrounding landscape.
Conclusion
PeakVisor is simple, useful, and provides all the information needed by sightseers. The ‘offline’ mode allows downloaded information to remain accessible, making it perfect for hikers.
