Defy death for the sake of love
Of Love and Eternity is a free adventure video game wherein you must rescue the lost soul of your beloved. Developed by Winston Powell a.k.a. acornbringer, this is a single-player 3D retro PSX-style game that features an atmospheric dark fantasy full of dangers and a combat system with an over-the-shoulder view.
The graphics and ambiance of Of Love and Eternity are reminiscent of Dark Souls—complete with the undead, grotesque creatures, and a dreary world filled with roaming and unmerciful enemies. This PS1-styled survival horror game is a demo and is still in active development.
In the name of love
Of Love and Eternity tells the tale of an unfortunate knight who finds his beloved too late as she stabbed to death. He soon follows after her and the two are separated in the limbo of souls. He is later revived back into his old body—already reduced to a skeleton—and now you must control him to start finding his lost love in this dangerous new world.
While this game has no in-game tutorial, the controls are easy enough to figure out. The WASD keys are for movement, the mouse is for controlling your camera, the Shift key is for running, and the Spacebar key is for attacking. To switch camera views, just press Left Ctrl. To zoom, click the right mouse button. Fortunately, the game also supports controllers.
The atmosphere and graphics of this game are phenomenal—accurately capturing the unsettling beauty of the late PSX graphics style. However, the demo doesn’t feature the combat system so you can’t test it out. You can only play through the first area, wherein you just explore the linear paths and get a feel of the environment. Additionally, the NPC you meet doesn’t give you any more narrative exposition.
Can be greatly expanded on
Overall, Of Love and Eternity is a lot of potential for becoming an iconic horror homage to a well-loved retro game style. While you can’t test out the combat and learn more about the world via the NPC, this demo has enough content to keep you excited about what the developer has planned. This is a highly recommended adventure game for fans of this genre.
