A point-and-click adventure science fiction game
My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant is a comedic point-and-click adventure game about a retired space captain who is dragged back into active service to help foil the plans of an interplanetary tyrant. Unfortunately for the space captain, that tyrant also happens to be his ex-boyfriend, which makes for an intriguing story about love and adventure.
The gameplay style is similar to point-and-click classics such as The Secret of Monkey Island, though the story is notable for featuring a cast of gay characters in an LGBTQ+ tale. It also features artwork by an award-winning artist.
Save worlds from your ex
The plot of My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant sees the player take on the role of Tycho Minogue, a retired space captain who is called back into service to help stop a tyrant. The catch is that the tyrant is Tycho’s ex-boyfriend, making for a potentially awkward reunion between the two former partners.
Point-and-click gameplay
The gameplay of My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant is standard point-and-click fare. The player can interact with items and characters by clicking on them. This mechanism is used to find objects, uncover clues, and talk to the characters they encounter throughout the game. All of this takes place against a backdrop of art by Joe Phillips, an award-winning artist.
More of a story than a game
While My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant deserves praise for delivering an LGBTQ+ game, many players have reported that the puzzles are very easy to the point that the game is almost more like a visual novel than a puzzle game. Additionally, a number of game-breaking bugs have remained in the game even after the developer was made aware of them.
