Dark Metroidvania action-adventure
Moonscars is a premium action game made by developer Black Mermaid for PC. It is a 2D side-scrolling title that features pixel graphics and takes inspiration from popular Metroidvania releases and roguelikes for its gameplay and combat. In it, players control a dark warrior in a relentless fight against the forces of darkness.
Similar to Blasphemous or Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, Moonscars features a gothic theme to it that is set in a dark and desolate world. It boasts a robust combat system featuring multiple skills and abilities that players will master and utilize to full effect.
Every death is a lesson
Moonscars takes place in a dark and grim world, and you take control of a clayborne warrior named Grey Irma. You have one solitary purpose for your existence, find the Sculptor, and unravel her mysteries. Throughout your somber journey, the mysterious forces of darkness are relentlessly coming after you. Each threat and challenge you face and overcome brings you closer to the truth.
Combat in this game allows for flexibility and adaptability, with attack combos and multiple skills at your disposal. In addition, you get to wield a variety of special weapons and take advantage of Witchery spells to change the way you fight. The actual fighting itself is very fast and fluid, with each weapon swing and attack parry providing some nice feedback for a more immersive experience.
The game revels in its unforgiving combat and embraces it. Each time you fail and try again offers better rewards. Triumph over your enemies unlocks another piece of the story. Uncover the truth behind your warrior race and your raison d’etre. If you’re new to these types of games, just know that they can get quite hard to play with their high difficulty curve.
A reason to fight
If you like your Metroidvania games on the darker side of the spectrum, Moonscars will be right up your alley. From its gothic presentation to its story, and punishing gameplay, it’s yet another great addition to the popular genre that is definitely worth checking out. It’s grim, intriguing, and addicting to play. Just prepare to die a lot. This one’s highly recommended and a must-play.
