Multifaceted cube puzzle game
Moncage is a premium mobile puzzle game from developer X.D. Network Inc. It’s a story-driven puzzler set in a surreal cube-like structure that hosts unique worlds on each of its sides. Players must analyze and identify the connection that links all of them to solve the underlying mystery.
Similar to Where Shadows Slumber or Figment: Journey Into The Mind, Moncage employs environmental puzzles to present its challenges and to help tell its story. It also boasts a distinct low-poly art design for its characters that help convey a surprisingly dark and moody atmosphere as players progress through its puzzles.
Trapped inside a cube
Moncage takes place inside a mysterious cube containing a unique world within each of its five facets. Upon first glance, these spaces are seemingly distinct from one another, portraying scenes that shift between industrial to nature-side, and the domestic in the blink of an eye. However, there is, in fact, a commonality among them that you will need to figure out for yourself.
The gameplay combines optical illusions with shifting perspectives that test your ability to connect the dots in unique and clever ways. With this idea in mind, you’ll form new images as you tilt, rotate, and turn the cube ever so slightly. When you find yourself stumped, you can activate your ‘focus’ that will highlight objects and flash text hints to provide some guidance.
Each picture you unlock tells part of a story alluding to a much larger narrative that will slowly bestow meaning and clarity to the dioramas you’ve been witnessing. Achievements are given out through 15 medals rewarding a specific feat or action you’ve accomplished as you play. Suffice it to say, this game is meant to be a proper challenge. Some will find it too difficult, though.
Tough and thought-provoking
In conclusion, if you’re a puzzle fan and are looking for a good challenge, Moncage has you covered with its clever design and gameplay premise. Also, it doesn’t hurt; it serves up rather distinct visuals to go along with its moody atmosphere. Not to mention, the intriguing story that it’s trying to convey, and the whole experience is worth its asking price.
