Play LOTR in Age of Mythology
Legends of Middle-Earth Mod is a free-to-use game utility developed by user Venlesh and powered by moddb for the strategy Age Of Mythology: The Titans Expansion. In this custom add-on, you get to experience the First Age from the popular fantasy franchise Lord of the Rings. Command the armies of elves, dwarves, or men and fight for dominance over Middle-Earth.
Legends of Middle-Earth Mod remodels existing units and buildings to create an accurate feel of the universe that J.R.R. Tolkien made.If you’re looking to get more LOTR content, check out The Battle for Middle-Earth HD Edition instead.
What to expect from this mod
The main strength of Legends of Middle-Earth Mod is that it successfully translates elements from the original franchise. It keeps the gameplay mechanics of Age of Mythology while units familiar to every LotR player. If you find the strategy mechanics of The Battle for Middle-Earth too cumbersome, this is a simpler, more enjoyable alternative. Furthermore, the custom civilizations remain largely balanced.
In terms of graphics, the developers created the extra effort to create realistic textures. Players of the base game are aware of its originally dated graphics and largely flat surface textures. For content, expect a new campaign that features its own, custom cinematics. All its elements figure out in a storytelling technique that also picks up on how Tolkien would’ve delivered his story in an interactive video game format.
However, inexperienced mod players might have a few problems running the mod. First, it requires The Titans Expansion installed and wouldn’t work with the base Age of Mythology game. It also doesn’t work with the Extended Edition: Tale of Dragon version of the game. Additionally, there are bugs in the free version that are resolved in the latter, yet paid versions.
Two franchises merge flawlessly
Overall, Legends of Middle-Earth Mod is a good mod to add to your AoM gaming library. Using the technical limitations of the original game, developers managed to successfully introduce elements from Middle-Earth with a visually engaging result. It does feature new content in terms of the civilizations available, plus an all-new campaign that even has its own cutscenes. However, take note that it requires The Titans Expansion installed.
