Tolkien mod for Shogun 2
Last Alliance: Total War Mod is a free-to-use game utility developed by user Sara_terner for the hit real-time strategy game Total War: Shogun 2. In this custom add-on, you get to experience the world explored in the Lord of the Rings and other works by J.R.R. Tolkien. It specifically focuses on the uneasy alliance between the Elves and the Dunedain, also known as the Men of the Westernesse.
In Last Alliance: Total War Mod you experience this battle against Sauron at the end of the Second Age. This makes it a viable alternative to The Battle for Middle-Earth.
Classic light vs darkness battles
For Tolkien fans, Last Alliance: Total War Mod has a lot to offer. First, it features the original Akallabeth Campaign, inspired by the book of the same name. In this epic yet unfortunate story of the Fall of Numenor, you get to experience reworked maps from the vanilla version as well as an original map created specifically for this campaign. However, the campaign remains incomplete and cuts halfway.
As a fantasy mod for a historical RTS, you can definitely expect entirely new races (instead of factions), units, buildings, and technologies to reflect the struggle between men and elves against the armies of the Dark Lord. It features custom models for a lot of the units and those lifted from base models were given new textures to really set itself apart from the vanilla version.
While it comes from a long-developed mod, you only need the latest version of the add-on plus a working copy of Shogun 2 to recreate your own Second Age wars. Its only limit, as mentioned before, is that it’s not yet complete. Not only does its campaign cuts halfway, but the races currently available are limited to the main races. The developers committed to more content in succeeding releases, though.
A promising fantasy add-on
Overall, Last Alliance: Total War Mod is a great way to experience the expanded Tolkien-verse beyond those offered by Lord of the Rings-inspired video games. By leveraging the mechanics of the original Shogun 2 game, it manages to create an immersive fantasy experience. If you’re a fan of fantasy work or of the strategy game, this is one mod you can’t pass out on.
