Meet Hank Hill and friends on Doom
King of the Hill Mod is a free mod for the game Doom 95. As the name suggests, it replaces the iconic Doom Marine with Hank Hill, the main character in the Fox animated series King of the Hill. More than the replaced character model, it also contains a couple of references to the TV show.
With its changes to the base game, King of the Hill Mod creates a fun yet short action experience, making the original demon-busting first-person shooter a casual backyard encounter. You can also try the Age of DOOM Mod or Doom Mod Pack+.
Be the King of the Hill
King of the Hill Mod is based on a TV series of the same name. This follows the everyday life of the Hill family, an average American family. Unlike other shows that feature outrageous and unlikely premises, this show focuses on everyday life. At the center of this show is Hank Hill, head of the family and an assistant manager, and the model replacement for Doom Guy in this game.
Hank Hill’s image is in the heads-up display (HUD). More importantly, you can see Hank’s full body when facing reflective surfaces in the game. Aside from replacing the model for the Doom Guy, the mod also replaces the weapons from the vanilla version. The most notable of them is the BFG9000, replaced with the barbecue grill featured in the series.
As a custom scenario, it’s not a full conversion of the original Doom game. Instead, it uses a custom map filled with King of the Hill materials and enemies from the base game. As such, it doesn’t run for too long, you can play it for about 30 minutes. Still, this short experience is peppered with fun references to the series, such as Smoking “Sammy” Salmon.
A fun pop culture crossover
King of the Hill Mod has a relatively short playthrough. Still, it serves as a reminder of what modding can do. It brings fans of two seemingly unrelated franchises, in this case, a TV series and a classic first-person shooter game. By replacing certain in-game assets, this mod changes the mood of the game despite retaining the same environment and same roster of opponents. Recommended.
