A free 8-bit text-based adventure game
Hibernated 1: This Place is Death (Director’s Cut) is a free text-only adventure game that transports your imagination to the mysteries of outer space. The game itself is nostalgic, as it features an 8-bit design to maintain a classic retro look. This is perfect for gamers who want a new but old experience when it comes to playing adventure games.
This is a rewrite of the award-winning Hibernated game by Stefan Vogt, a writer of interactive fiction for 8-bit and 16-bit computers. He still had a lot of hand in the rewrite, which includes tons of additional content and riddles.
Solo space adventure
Hibernated 1: This Place is Death (Director’s Cut) is set in space. The story revolves around a heroine, Olivia Lund, who woke up alone after almost 20 years in hypersleep on a stranded ship, the Polaris-7. By typing commands, you get to investigate the ship, use objects, communicate with Olivia’s AI companion called Io, and move deeper into the story.
The game is pretty straightforward—although it doesn’t do well in helping you imagine the entire scene and the items you need to use. Sometimes, objects are simply called “X SLAB” without any explanation of what it looks like, so you may have a hard time figuring out what it does. Meanwhile, these constraints can also make the game more challenging and more interesting to play.
Before you play this game, however, you must set your expectations going in. This is a text-based 8-bit game, so the reading itself can be hard on the eyes. Additionally, the goal of playing this type of game is to enjoy the story while honing your imagination by analyzing the text to solve problems. So, you must also prepare yourself for a lot of guessing.
A new experience for modern gamers
Sometimes, limiting the capabilities of a game can provide a different challenge that can be a great experience for gamers. Take away the special effects and complicated gameplay, and you get titles like Hibernated 1: This Place is Death (Director’s Cut). Take note, however, that this game will require a lot of reading. Aside from that, the story is both enjoyable and thrilling.
