What Are HDT Equipment and How Do They Affect the Game?

There are several HDT equipment items that were created by fans to use in skyrim. One example is the grapple pole. The question I have is Why is there HDT Equipment for SSE? and How do they make them so realistic looking, when most of them look like toys? These types of equipment were created for the skyrim mods. The authors obviously made them for skim because most skyrim mods don’t have any HDT physics. Only one person seems to have made them, and he was too lazy to make them good, so he made them pretty much from scratch.
