Cult JRPG HD collection
.hack//G.U. Last Recode is a special celebratory collection of the original three JRPG .hack games and an all new adventure. Enter The World as Haseo and fight against mysterious powers.
Return to The World
Released back in 2002 for the PS2, the .hack games revolve around the idea of a virtual MMO dubbed The World. Players control the VR avatar of Haseo and embark on a quest to defeat the mysterious Tri-Edge who has somehow managed to damage real life characters through the game. .hack//G.U. Last Recode features revamped HD editions of Rebirth, Reminisce and Redemption alongside the new adventure Reconnection. Beyond the interesting, Matrix inspired plot device, the games are fairly standard JRPGs. Battles are fought in an open world action style alongside a team of characters. Items and weapons can be found, side quests are available and a typically dramatic and angsty plot drive the story along. An anime style art direction is well suited to the new HD textures, but the game still looks dated. .hack//G.U. Last Recode improves on the original releases in nearly all regards, but will not appeal to those outside of the already established fan base.
Admirably done
.hack//G.U. Last Recode brings together the cult classic JRPGs into an expertly produced package. Despite these improvements, it still plays like a typical example of the genre.
