Mobile version of the Gorilla Tag game
Gorilla Tag is a free action game for mobile from indie developer Josiah Jenkins. It is a title inspired by the popular VR multiplayer PC game of the same name. In it, players control a gorilla trying to survive in a world where humans and other gorillas have become infected.
Compared to the original Gorilla Tag game for PC, this mobile version expectedly does away with the VR elements in its gameplay and changes the perspective to a third-person view. Aside from that, it features similar game mechanics and conditions that fans of the original will be familiar with.
Deadly game of tag
Gorilla Tag is a virtual reality game that made waves in the gaming community with its immersive gameplay and its slightly disturbing yet humorous presentation. You play an ape without legs in a world wherein humans and gorillas alike have been infected. You must now run, jump, and climb to avoid getting the disease or infecting others yourself in a twisted game of tag.
There have been other games that took inspiration from the original, and one of them is the similarly named Gorilla Tag for mobile. There is one crucial change, though, and it’s the aforementioned shift to a third-person perspective. That means the experience is slightly less immersive, but you do get a better scope of your surroundings, which makes it easier to avoid pursuers or see others you can infect.
The controls have been optimized for touchscreen input, so it’s just as intuitive as its PC counterpart. The mechanics are still the same, with the choice of playing the infected or non-infected as you like. Another unfortunate omission is a multiplayer mode, which is one of the aspects that made the original so fun to play. You have to settle for AI-controlled characters that act weird sometimes.
Not quite the same experience
All in all, this mobile version of Gorilla Tag is an OK effort to replicate the experience of the original. The shift in perspectives is expected but the gameplay thankfully remains the same. The lack of multiplayer does hurt a little bit as the AI can act a bit too erratically at times. It’s still worth a try. Just manage your expectations.
