Capcom’s original Ghosts’n Goblins was one of the most popular games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, praised for its difficulty and intense action. Players fight against an army of ghosts, vampires and skeletons armed with an endless supply of spears. The game’s difficulty factor came from the fact that Sir Arthur could only take two hits and a limited supply of lives with most players never seeing past the first level. While Ghosts’n Goblins MOBILE has nearly been forgotten today, it remains a classic for Nintendo fans. This port, rethought for the smartphone, brings a casual mode and new achievements with little else changed from the original. While this brings some much needed easing of the difficulty, the control schemes mean that the tight control scheme is completely lost.

Mixed bag

Ghosts’n Goblins MOBILE is an admirable attempt at revitalising an old gem for a new audience which is sadly undermined by the lack of tight controls, essential for such a title. The fact is that a smartphone screen just can’t provide detailed controls. Leader boards and achievements are a nice touch but fail to make up for the fundamental failings inherent to this version.
