Funk it up with this mobile version

FMF Mod is a free music mobile video game wherein you get to play Friday Night Funkin’ on your mobile device. Developed by DDD Studios, this is an unofficial mobile port of the game that offers a full set of 7 weeks and all songs available, as well as both Story Mode and Freeplay. 

Unlike most mods, this neither adds any new content for the community’s enjoyment nor “remixes” any previous mods. It’s simply a mobile port so you can play the original game on your phone or tablet. It acts more like a specialized emulator, though.

Groove on the go

Friday Night Funkin’ is a free open-source music video game first released in 2020 for the Ludum Dare 47 competition. Created by ninjamuffin99, this rhythm game has you playing as a guy who tries to win a date by defeating interlopers via rap battles and sing-offs. The easy-to-master but challenging gameplay made it a hit indie game and its open-source code eventually nabbed it dozens of cool mods.

The developer plans for a mobile version of the game but DDD Studios beat them with the release of FMF Mod, which unofficially ported almost all levels into mobile. Here, you can play the tutorial level, the first 6 weeks with their respective enemies, and the week for the Mid-Fight Masses mod. Unfortunately, Week 7 from the original game isn’t available—and neither are the other popular mods.

Aside from these, you can play both Story Mode and Freeplay, and these two are unlocked the same way as the original game’s. Instead of your keyboard, you can choose from four control inputs: a left directional pad, a right directional pad, both left and right D-pads, and a touchscreen overlay hitbox. They’re easy enough to use but some songs’ speed can make them lag on hitting the notes.

Still an impressive port

All in all, FMF Mod is a pretty great option for a mobile version as it offers almost all levels, one popular FNF mod, and four touchscreen controllers. While it’s not exactly complete, it still lets you select the difficulty of each song and lets you aim for high scores. It could use some optimization when it comes to hitting the arrows, though. Plus, some ads shouldn’t be blocking the screen.
