Single-player 2D action and adventure RPG

FINAL FANTASY VI is a single-player Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) that represents the sixth chapter of the larger Final Fantasy franchise. The main difference is that the associated graphics have been outfitted with a pixel-based retro appeal. Fans of early online games should find this iteration quite nostalgic.

While the pixelated graphics are immediately noticeable in this 2D game, the storyline and narrative are similar to other platforms within the Final Fantasy franchise (such as Final Fantasy VII, its successor).

Staying true to the original

The developers of this game have gone to great lengths in order to ensure that the gameplay itself offers the same sense of mysticism that has been associated with the entire series. Thus, the remastered soundtrack was overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu. The character graphics are in accordance with those created by Kazuko Shibuya.

Much-anticipated improvements

FINAL FANTASY VI offers several noticeable enhancements. These include (but are not limited to) a modernized UI, automated battles, and an updated opera scene with improved vocal performances. This version should appeal to new players and seasoned veterans alike.

Customization options

Similar to other games in this series, players can customize specific abilities, such as magic spells and summoning, according to their overall strategies. This provides an impressive level of flexibility, and it also ensures unique experiences in what would otherwise be considered linear gameplay.

A classic taken to the next level

FINAL FANTASY VI reflects the recent trend of imbuing classic games with a nostalgic flavor through the use of pixel art. Other examples of such an approach can be seen in platforms like Rivals of Aether and well-known franchises, such as the original DOOM series.
