The demo of FIFA 18 is here: is it the revolution that EA Sports promised?
The demo ofFIFA 18 has left us feeling indifferent. FIFA 18 has the look of being a decentgame but then it is simply not allowed to look bad. Unfortunately, a”decent” delivery is not enough. We were promised a revolution butall we’ve got is a modest step forward with respect to FIFA 17.
What’s new in the demo?
FIFA 18 has four great new features. A new system for crossing gives you more freedom to pass the ball, Cristiano Ronaldo’s extensive participation has allowed him to transfer his skills and techniques to the game, certain players behave like they do in real life and as a cherry on top we have a totally different evasion system.
In the demo, the fusion of all these innovations results in a much more physical and tactical game than ever. What is most noticeable is how unique each player is. For example, Bakayoko and Kante both really stand out for Chelsea. One of the more obvious changes to the gameplay is that now it is not enough to press a single button to defend successfully. Moreover, you’ll be punished harshly if you make mistakes whilst trying to regain possession of the ball.
The problem is that we’re missing that “something new” that we got with the FIFA 17 demo when it introduced The Journey. Yes, FIFA 18 is more beautiful, more tactical and more physical but it is little else. It is not the revolution that EA Sports have been insisting we’d get via their trailers and marketing campaigns. In addition, we’re saddened to report that many of the problems of FIFA 17, such as the strange and erratic behavior of AI are still present, as if EA didn’t even know they existed.
Other news
In the case of FIFA 18 Ultimate Team, when the full game is released you will have legends like Ronaldo Nazario, Diego Maradona, Pelé or Ronaldhino available to you. FUT represents them at different times throughout their iconic careers in the world of football. Daily and weekly objectives have also been added.
The Journey returns, with Hunter as the protagonist. In this story mode we will have even more star players involved in the action, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, James Harden … The campaign is now structured with shorter objectives, you can customize Alex and even bring other secondary characters in via mini-campaigns that will be unlocked as you progress.
Graphically, FIFA 18 has improved significantly. The faces are more realistic, the movements are more fluid and the stadiums have more details. If you value immersion, like in a real football game, FIFA continues to give you what you want.
