A visual novel based around a fictional MMORPG
Emberfate: Tempest of Elements is a free game released under a “name your own price” model, where the buyer can choose to support the developer if they wish. The game is a visual novel based around a group of players from a popular MMORPG, like World of Warcraft. However, the MMORPG referenced in this game is fictional.
Like other visual novels, such as John Doe, this game presents the narrative using text accompanied by artistic visualizations. But unlike many visual novels, the story and dialogue in Emberfate take place over online chats and video calls between gaming friends.
Become a guild leader
In Emberfate: Tempest of Elements, the player takes on the role of a guild leader in a popular (fictional) MMORPG called Emberfate. At the time of the story, a new expansion for Emberfate has just been released, and the player must manage their fellow player’s real-life problems to ensure that the guild succeeds.
Interpersonal narratives
Though the driving plot element of Emberfate: Tempest of Elements is the guild’s success in the game, the actual gameplay is more concerned with the well-being and relationships with other guild members. The player must talk to them and help them through the issues they are dealing with outside of the game.
A standard visual novel with an interesting twist
While the format of Emberfate: Tempest of Elements is a standard visual novel, the game’s presentation is not common. The game is presented as though the player is at the computer of their character, with dialogue happening over online chat and video calls.
MMORPG knowledge is not necessary
Players of the game have reported that it is unnecessary to have previous knowledge of MMORPGs to play the game, largely because the story centers around guild member relationships. However, the strong MMORPG theme may still be a turn-off for those who have no interest in this type of game.
