What is the Islamic Calendar?

The Muslim calendar, also called Islamic or Hijri calendar, is a dating setup the Muslim world uses for religious reasons. The other parts of the world follow the Gregorian calendar. The Islamic calendar’s year comprises 12 months, with each month approximately starting on the day of the new moon. The months comprise 29 and 30 days alternately. However, the length of the 12th month, which is the Dhu al-Hijjah, is changed every 30 years to keep up the calendar on par with the true moon phases. In other words, Dhu al-Hijjah comprises 30 days during the first 11 years, and 29 days in the remaining 19 years. The Islamic calendar, therefore, has either 355 or 354 days.
