Super cool retro-modern robot shoot ’em up
Droid Assault is a top down shooter with a really cool modern yet simple graphics.
You control a droid whose only ability is to take control of other droids – which is necessary as all other droids must be destroyed! You destroy them by taking over a droid with weapons, then taking out everything on every level. There are many types of droids, with better or worse weapons, and much of the game’s tactics are based around what type of droid you like to take over or just to shoot.
Every level has to be cleared before you can continue. Droid Assault is heavily influenced by 80s game Paradroid, but removes the puzzle element for droid take-overs, making less cerebral but faster paced gameplay. Your droid has radar, showing you where the closest droid is, so you don’t have to wander around aimlessly looking for that last droid to dispatch.
Droid Assault looks great, the droids are kind of cute but don’t make the game cutesy. The learning curve is about right, and the action is accompanied by excellent effects and music. There is lots of character and surprising nice touches throughout.
Droid Assault is a retro game you can play without feeling you are in 1984, as it looks and feels very contemporary. The options, auto saves and online high score tables make it a great overall package..
