Free Word Processor and Alternative to Microsoft Word
Doc Writer is a ‘freemium’ word processor, marketed as an alternative to Microsoft Word. It offers support for Word file formats like .doc and .docx, in addition to support for .txt, .rtf and .odt formats, but is more lightweight and basic than the Microsoft package, with an emphasis on speed and user-friendliness.
Features and Limitations
The free version of Doc Writer allows users to open and edit the aforementioned file types and includes an autosave function. However, in order to gain the ability to save or export documents, users need to upgrade to the paid premium version. In terms of core word processing functions, the package includes a spell checker, a find and replace feature, the option to change fonts, and a live word count, while the premium version adds support for images and tables.
Ideal for Casual Requirements
Despite its name, the free version’s limitations mean that it is arguably best utilized as a Microsoft Word document viewer, rather than a package for creating Word files. However, the premium version provides a much more comprehensive range of options and is a viable alternative to Word for those with casual requirements.
