Does Day of the Tentacle Remastered stand up?
Day of the Tentacle Remastered is one of those point and click games that has such a simple game play that you could be forgiven for thinking that it is for kids only. However, nothing could be further from the truth. It is great fun to play and offers some compelling, even addictive, qualities which will keep you interested.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered in overview
Originally released way back in 1993, Day of the Tentacle has been updated for the mobile generation. It was developed as a follow on from Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, but the original Day of the Tentacle offered so much more than its predecessor. The Remastered versions is much the same as the last version, presenting a whacky world in which time travel and cartoon style puzzles need to be solved in order to progress. However, it is also a kind of adventure game in which you must save the world. The game features three friends who are unlikely heroes to say the least and who need to prevent a mutated purple tentacle, the work of Dr. Fred, from spreading its grasp.
Reissuing the classic game
Since Day of the Tentacle Remastered is essentially a remake you might well ask what is new in it. Well, not much. The game retains the zaniness and overall concept of the original, however. That said, the graphics are of a far superior quality to the original, as you might expect for something that is being released commercially almost a quarter of a century after the original. Indeed, the audio and characterizations are vastly improved, too. You can hear this in the audio effects, the music and the voice over recordings for each of the characters. The music has been remastered using the MIDI iMUSE system and is very appealing. Indeed, there’s nothing to make you think that the retro vibe will mean you are experiencing an old game. It all feels fresh and new and many younger players won’t realize it is a reissue at all when playing it for the very first time. Having said that, you can opt to switch back and forth between the classic game and the remastered version in various game modes, but this just adds to the fun. Game operation is simple for iOS users. You can use a mouse, but just tapping on the screen is enough to get all of the game working just fine. Lastly, the game gives you the option to listen to a commentary from the original creators, but why would you want to do this when you could be playing?
Day of the Tentacle Remastered – A conclusion
This game is likely to be popular among players who have a love of retro games from the classic floppy disk era of home entertainment. However, it will be just as much fun for those who have never even seen such technology. Although the game is basically unoriginal, there is more than enough to keep you entertained even if you remember the first one. With improved graphics, sound and gameplay, there is nothing to hold you back.
