Survival horror RPG modeled after Chernobyl

Chernobylite is a first-person action game for PC developed by The Farm 51. It’s a survival horror game set in a fictional world that was modeled after Chernobyl’s nuclear disaster site, particularly a 3D scan of its Exclusion Zone wherein players will be able to explore.

Certain comparisons have been made between Chernobylite and the highly popular S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in terms of presentation. In reality, though, the game manages to mix various gameplay elements, a linear progression system, and an emphasis on story, to make it stand on its own merits.

What is Chernobylite all about?

In Chernobylite, you play as a former physicist from the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant named Igor. Set years after the unfortunate incident, he makes his way back to the Exclusion Zone to resume his research, as well as to search for clues on the fate of his wife who went missing all those years ago. This is the point where the game will start to transition to more sci-fi themes.

Igor’s research and experiments actually involve wormholes that were made possible by a mysterious substance that appeared out of the nuclear accident. You and a partner plan and plot excursions in the form of missions in small open maps throughout the zone. When outside, you need to juggle a bunch of things, from the radiation to enemy encounters(human and monster), and dealing with your own sanity as events unfold all around you.

Then, the survival element of the game kicks in to provide even more of a challenge. Aside from maintaining and upgrading your base of operations, you will need to constantly monitor your resources and food rations, which you and your partner will need for health, sanity, and overall effectiveness in fights. Needless to say, Chernobylite’s difficulty curve can ramp up rather sharply.

An immersive and haunting experience

First of all, if you’re a fan of games set in those sorts of spooky nuclear wastelands, Chernobylite will be right up your alley. More than that, though, it manages to provide a truly immersive and haunting experience from start to finish. From the intriguing story to the RPG elements, and the harsh survival mechanic, this is a game that is well worth playing.
