Bramble: The Mountain King is a premium adventure game from Dimfrost Studio and Merge Games. In this atmospheric horror experience, heavily inspired by tales and fables from Nordic lore, you play as Olle. The young boy sets out on a dark, immersive world to save his sister, who was kidnapped by a troll.

Similar to the challenge and aesthetics of games like It Takes Two and Little Nightmares II, Bramble: The Mountain King is a dark fantasy story brought to video game life. Its steep learning curve and effective use of horror elements make the game surprisingly effective.

Save your sister in a dark, dreary world

If you’re a fan of films, Bramble: The Mountain King can be likened to the dark fantasy vibes of Pan’s Labyrinth plus a visual aesthetic similar to 9. It has a beautifully designed world that captures lush green mountains, towering waterfalls, and serene lakes. One particularly impressive aspect of the visual is its scale. There are times when the environment looks human-sized, while others simply dwarf your character in comparison.

Even the enemies are designed very well. From frightening trolls and the water sprite Nacken to the gnomes, or Nisse, there is variety and immersion in each of them. Be warned though to not take the game lightly regardless of what you see on-screen. Every enemy has its own means of ending your adventure. This adds a strategic layer to the game, letting you choose when to fight or run.

The first thing to note about the game is the difficulty curve. You can’t judge them based on appearances; the right thing to do isn’t always provided straightforwardly. Additionally, the game doesn’t shy away from embracing its dark premise. Expect mature content, whether as a part of the background or an inevitable result of boss encounters. Some of these mythical creatures even feature partial nudity.

Bringing atmospheric horror to a new level

Bramble: The Mountain King has made an impact on how it delivers its Nordic folklore to gamers. It has been compared to Little Nightmares II and noted to be just as scary, if not scarier. The game features an impressive set design, complementing the character designs that went into the project. On the other hand, expect it to be difficult, shocking, and filled with mature content. Still, it’s highly recommended.
